El Salvador to Keep Community Leaders and Ex-Guerrillas in Prison

Santa Marta community protests ex-combatants’ detainment after initial hearing

On Thursday, January 20th, 2023, 8 ex-combatants of the internal armed conflict that spanned from the years 1980 to 1992 were detained after the initial hearing of a criminal proceeding in Isidro Menéndez Judicial Center.

According to Dennis Muñoz, a defense attorney, the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) has 6 months to continue with the investigation, a period that can be extended “if the Prosecutor requests it”.

One of the signatories of the Peace Accords of 1992, Eduardo Sancho Castaneda, with the war pseudonym Fermán Cienfuegos, is also involved in the case. All of the accused are charged with murder, deprivation of liberty, and illegal groups.

Residents of the Santa Marta community in the central department of Cabañas, one of the areas largely affected by the armed internal conflict, arrived at the court to appeal the detainment. Leaders of the community were also the pioneers of a new anti-mining law that was approved in 2017 and prohibits certain chemical processes.
