Disney has made a big move in the gaming world by purchasing a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games. This partnership will result in the development of a new expansive, open, persistent, and social universe that will be connected to Fortnite. Fans will be able to play, watch, purchase, and interact with their favorite Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other characters and stories.

The announcement was made during Disney’s Q1 FY24 Earnings Call. The new experience, built on Unreal Engine, will allow players to create their own stories and experiences, express their fandom in a distinctively Disney way, and share content with each other.

Robert A. Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, expressed his excitement about the new relationship with Epic Games, stating that it will unite beloved Disney brands and franchises with the popular Fortnite game in a transformative new universe of games and entertainment. He also mentioned that this marks Disney’s largest entry into gaming and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion.

Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games, highlighted Disney’s early belief in the potential of bringing their worlds together with Fortnite and their use of Unreal Engine across their entire product portfolio. He also mentioned that the collaboration will result in the creation of a persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem that will unite the Disney and Fortnite communities.

While no further details have been provided about the project or its release date, it is said to be a “multi-year project” and aims to expand on the previous collaborations between Disney and Epic Games in Fortnite. These collaborations have included the introduction of Marvel and Star Wars skins in the game, as well as live events such as Marvel’s Nexus War with Galactus, which brought together 15.3 million concurrent players.

This new experience will likely work similarly to LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival, existing within Fortnite but as standalone games that can be launched from within the game itself. The partnership between Disney and Epic Games is set to bring about a major new gaming experience for fans.
