Czech Republic Holds First Round of Presidential Elections

Czech Republic set to Elect New President fro mFriday’s Voting

The Czech Republic is set to mark the first round of presidential elections this Friday (01.13.2023). Polls will be open between 1:00 p.m.and 9:00 p.m. localtime and tomorrow (Saturday) between 07:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. localtime. Over 8 million citizens are entitled to participate in these elections to pick the new president and replace the current president, Social Democrat Milos Zeman, who ends his second five-year term in March.

The polls suggest that the favorite candidate is Petr Pavel, a former chief of the General Staff of the Czech Army and of the NATO military committee. Pavel has a 29 percent voting intention and closely followed by former prime minister Andrej Babis, an agribusiness tycoon who leads the ANO populist opposition movement. Recently, Babis was acquitted in an EU-funded corruption trial just days prior to the election and therefore his chances of winning in the first round have increased. Danuse Nerudova, an economist and former rector of Mendel University in Brno is the third highes-supported candidate in the polls and is also backed by the ruling Spolu coalition.

If none of the candidates receive more than 50 percent of the votes, a second round of voting will take place two weeks later.
