Mets Struggle Against Sub-.500 Teams
The New York Mets seemed to be making progress in their season after finishing their last home stand with five straight victories. However, they have since lost series against the Tigers, Rockies, Reds, and now the Cubs – sub-.500 teams. In their most recent loss against the Cubs, they received a poor start from Kodai Senga and had little luck on the offensive side against Marcus Stroman. The game ended in a 4-2 loss for the Mets, leaving them at an even 25-25 record for the season.
Stellar Performance from Marcus Stroman
Marcus Stroman had a tremendous game against his former team, allowing only one run and four hits over eight innings. The only run he allowed was a home run by Francisco Alvarez. Stroman’s performance left him ecstatic, and he was seen celebrating after getting the third out of the eighth inning.
Lack of Offensive Output
The Mets have only scored two runs in each of their last three games, following a series of excitement created by walk-off victories on their last home stand. Kodai Senga allowed 11 base runners in five innings, but only three runs scored. Alvarez’s two-run homer in the third inning gave the Mets a brief 2-0 lead, but they struggled to score any more runs throughout the game.
Mistakes Cost Mets
Pete Alonso’s mistake in the fourth inning proved costly for the team, as he ran to second base on what was a fly ball to left field. He was thrown out retreating back to first base, ending the inning and any chance of a rally. Senga also struggled in the third inning, allowing three runs. Drew Smith gave up a homer to Nico Hoerner in the sixth inning, ultimately sinking the Mets further into a 4-2 hole.
Overall, the Mets will need to make significant improvements on both offensive and defensive sides if they want to turn their season around.
