Congressmen Seek to Label Wagner Mercenaries as Terrorists
Bipartisan Bill Seeks To List Russian Mercenary Group Wagner As Terrorist Organization:
A bipartisan bill seeking to classify the Russian mercenary group Wagner as a terrorist organization was presented to the Congress of USA on Wednesday. If approved, the State Department would have to include the group in their list of terrorist organizations, which already have groups such as Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram. The proposal aims to address the involvement of Wagner mercenaries in war atrocities like massacres, torture and rape in Ukraine and Central African Republic.
The White House had already sanctioned Wagner Group and referred to it as a ‘criminal transnational organization’. It is estimated that the group consists of approximately 50,000 troops, among which 10,000 would be contractors and 40,000 ex-convicts.
“The Wagner Group is made up of ruthless mercenaries and terrorists who kill indiscriminately and carry out Putin’s orders,” said María Elvira Salazar, one of the bill’s sponsors. Entities and individuals providing financial or material support to the terrorist groups listed can be charged criminally, the US State Department said.
The bill, if approved, would order the State Department to include Wagner on its list of terrorist organizations within a period of no more than 90 days.
