The iconic video game character Mario is set to make his big screen debut in Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, and fans have been divided over the decision to cast Chris Pratt in the role of the beloved plumber. However, director Aaron Horvath and producer Chris Meledandri have defended the choice, praising Pratt’s ability to bring Mario to life.
In an interview with Total Film, Horvath stated that Pratt was the perfect choice for the role, citing his ability to portray a hero with “a lot of heart”. Meledandri has also responded to fan criticism of the lack of an Italian accent in Pratt’s performance, saying that once people hear his performance, the criticism will go away.
The film’s first trailer was released last October, sparking debate over Pratt’s voice for the role. Fans were quick to point out that this was Pratt’s normal voice, and many questioned why Charles Martinet, the longtime voice actor for Mario, hadn’t been cast. However, the film will include cameos by Martinet, and he has expressed his love for the role, saying he wants to “voice Mario until he dies”.
Super Mario Bros: The Movie is set to be released on April 5, 2023, and a Nintendo Direct focused on the film is planned for March 9, 2023. Until then, fans can look forward to the movie, and the chance to see the beloved plumber take on the big screen.
