New Travel Advisory Implores LGBTQ Travellers to Familiarize Themselves with US State Laws
In a recent travel advisory issued by Ottawa, LGBTQ travellers are being cautioned about the potential risks associated with visiting the United States. The advisory, released on Tuesday, specifically targets those who identify as 2SLGBTQI+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex individuals), urging them to familiarize themselves with the laws of the state they plan to visit.
The advisory from Global Affairs Canada highlights that certain states in the US have implemented laws and policies that may have an impact on 2SLGBTQI+ individuals. Consequently, travellers are advised to check the relevant state and local laws to ensure their safety and security during their visit.
When questioned about the updated advice, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of all Canadians, including diverse groups. She stated that the government has a team of experts constantly monitoring for potential risks to specific groups of Canadians, adding that their safety and interests are at the forefront of government actions.
In recent months, a number of US states have faced criticism for passing laws that limit LGBTQ rights. These laws include restrictions on gender transitions for minors, prohibitions on transgender individuals participating in women’s sports, and bans on public drag shows. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest LGBTQ advocacy group in the US, declared a national state of emergency in June, citing significant threats against the LGBTQ community.
Despite these concerns, over 20 million Canadians travel to the US annually, with the US being their top destination by a considerable margin. Government data reveals that approximately 4 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older identify as a sexual orientation other than heterosexual.
The travel advisory serves as a reminder for LGBTQ travellers to exercise caution and be aware of the legal landscape in the US, varying from state to state. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, LGBTQ individuals can better protect themselves while enjoying their travels abroad.
