Berlin Summons Iranian Ambassador for Talks After Latest Execution

**Germany Expresses dismay over Execution of British-Iranian Citizen Alireza Akbari**

The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin to express its ire over the execution of Alireza Akbari, a British-Iranian citizen and former deputy defense minister.

Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed this call this Monday (01.15.2023), without specifying the details or content.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in her Twitter account, strongly condemned the “inhumane act” held by the Iranian regime. Showing her solidarity with the British friends, she also stated that Olaf Scholz andshe “have expressed their dismay” at the consecutive execution that followed the protests in Iran.

Akbari, who held the position of deputy defense minister during the tenure of the reformist president Mohamed Katami (1997-2005), was sentenced by a court for “spying for MI6”, the British foreign intelligence service. This execution has triggered the highest condemnation from the United Kingdom, the whole of the European Union (EU), particularly from France and Germany.
