Benin’s opposition party, the Democrats, have called for the immediate and unconditional release of Reckya Madougou, a member of their party who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in December 2019 for allegedly financing terrorism. The Democrats claim that Madougou’s arrest and conviction were politically motivated and that she has been deprived of her fundamental rights. Despite the harsh conditions of her detention, Madougou is said to be in good spirits and has become a symbol of resistance in her country. Her lawyer and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention have also called for her release. As the deadline approaches for the government’s response to the UN’s demand, the Democrats hope that justice will be served and that democracy will be restored in Benin.
