President of Peru urges Congress to approve an electoral advance for 2023
President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, urged the Congress on Friday (01.27.2023) to approve an electoral advance for 2023, as a measure to get out of the crisis that it is going through the country and in response to one of the main demands of the protests.
The Fujimori party Fuerza Popular proposed the same day that the advance of the general elections in Peru from April 2024 be modified for a date this year, a position that was debated again this Friday in Parliament.
Boluarte noted that initially his government had proposed April 2024 for the elections and prompted Parliament to respond to Fuerza Popular’s request. She added that any conditions such as including a consultation on a constituent assembly will be giving opportunity to “radicalize and bloody the country”.
Fujimori legislator Hernando Guerra García had requested a reconsideration of the vote approved, in the first instance, on December 20 for the general elections to be held in April 2024.
