Arrest of Italy’s Most Wanted Fugitive, Messina Denaro, Boss of Cosa Nostra
Carabinieri Arrest Notorious Mob Boss Matteo Messina Denaro After 30-Year Hunt
On January 16, 2023, the Carabinieri successfully arrested the country’s most wanted man, Matteo Messina Denaro, in a private health clinic in Palermo, Sicily. The mobster, facing multiple life sentences for his role in the 1993 Cosa Nostra assaults and many homicides, had evaded justice for 30 years.
The arrest was due to the increased investigations from Palermo prosecutors Maurizio de Lucia and his deputy Paolo Guido.
Denaro, believed to be one of the last active “capo di tutti capi” of the Sicilian mafia and known as “the las of the last,” has been hunted for almost three decades.
Denaro’s capture has been praised by many as an important victory in the battle against organized crime in the country. The arrest removes a major menace to organized crime in Sicily and is seen as a major success of the law enforcement community.
