American Amanda Anisimova has made a fantastic start to the year after securing a main draw victory in the Adelaide International tennis tournament. The 21-year-old saw off Russian Liudmila Samsonova 7-5, 6-3 despite having to go through qualifying and a lucky loser second chance.
Anisimova was a former French Open semifinalist and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year. Her opponent had seven double faults and was broken on five occasions which allowed Anisimova to advance to the second round in which she will face Beatriz Haddad Maia.
American Tommy Paul got off to a winning start in 2021 after he beat Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 7-5 in the first round. Paul, who reached the quarterfinals of both Adelaide tournaments last year, expressed his satisfaction after a successful start to the season.
These two results give the Americans a strong opening to the Adelaide International, with both Anisimova and Paul looking to build on their strong performances.
