Alfaro Guides Tigres to Victory in Dominican Final Showdown

Tigres del Licey One Win Away From Championship Title After Victory Against Estrellas Orientales

Santo Domingo, 17 Jan. (EFE). Colombian Jorge Alfaro homered and drove in two runs to lead the Tigres del Licey to a 1-3 victory against the Estrellas Orientales on Tuesday in the final series of the Dominican winter baseball championship.

Los Tigres (3-1), with this victory against the Stars (1-3), placed one victory away from winning the title of champions in the final of the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (Lidom), which is scheduled for the best of seven games.

Alfaro opened the scoring in the first inning with his second home run of the final when he sent the ball over the left field wall of the Tetelo Vargas stadium, in San Pedro de Macorís (east), against the pitches of the starter for the Orientals, Edwin Uceta (0-1), giving the Tigers the advantage of 0-1.

The Blues returned to the attack in the fourth inning, when after two outs, Cuban Dairon Blanco running at second base, Sergio Alcántara fired a hit to left field, with which Blanco reached the register, adding the second round (0-2) for those directed by José Offerman.

Alfaro was present again in the fifth inning, when after walking Ronny Mauricio, he hit a double down the entire left field line, against reliever Phillips Valdez, pushing Mauricio with the third score (0-3). The Stars responded with a run (1-3) on hits from two bases by Robinson Canó and Lewin Díaz.

The cats put a man on second and third in the ninth inning, but the closer for the greens, Ronel Blanco, struck out Emilio Bonifacio and kept the deficit (1-3) in two runs for the Stars. However, the Stars threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, placing runners on first and second with one out, but the cats’ right-hand reliever, Jonathan Aro struck out Robinson Canó to get out of the situation.

In the game, the Tigers once again had effective pitching led by American right-hander Brooks Hall (1-0), who pitched the first five innings, scoring one run and striking out six batters.

The tigers receive the Stars in Santo Domingo to play the fifth game of the final series, where if they win they will be crowned champions of the Dominican tournament.
