ScienceWorld·January 18, 2023·1 min read7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Eastern Indonesia Indonesia hit by 7 magnitude earthquake, but no damage or casualties reported A 7 magnitude earthquake hit 154 kilometers northwest of Tobelo and 218 kilometers north of Ternate, both cities in the Moluccas in Indonesia on January 18, 2023 at 3:06 p.m. local time (06:06 GMT). The United States Geological Survey, which records global seismic activity, indicated that the earthquake was located 47 kilometers deep. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Service issued a tsunami warning, however, it was lifted soon afterwards. Indonesia is known to be part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity in which some 7,000 earthquakes are recorded each year, most of them moderate. Fortunately, so far, no damage or casualties have been reported due to this earthquake.
