NYPD and FDNY Face Off in Battle of the Badges Boxing Event
The NYPD and FDNY boxing clubs will face off in the 32nd Battle of the Badges on Friday at Terminal 5 in Manhattan. This highly anticipated event will feature 12 bouts of fights, including the first-ever match-up between two women.
Leading up to the event, both clubs have been putting in months of sweat and training, hoping to secure a win for their respective departments. “We are hoping that our superior physical capacities will carry us to victory,” said Bobby McGuire, the president of the FDNY Boxing Club.
But the tradition of the Battle of the Badges is not just about bragging rights. The event is also a fundraiser for Tunnel to Towers and NYC Cops & Kids Boxing, two organizations that have had a positive impact on many of the fighters in the ring. “Cops & Kids helped me become the fighter I am today,” said eight-time Golden Glove Champion Nisa Rodriguez from the 1st precinct.
While the goal is to raise money for charity, the fighters and attendees are promised an intense competition. “I think a lot of people the next day are going to be like, ‘I’m putting my daughter in a boxing program,’ after watching us in there,” shared Nicole Malpeso from Engine 76.
Although the event is sold out, it will be live-streamed for those unable to attend. The stream can be accessed for $19.99 in advance or $29.00 on the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the first bout starting at 8 p.m.
The Battle of the Badges is a long-standing tradition that brings the NYPD and FDNY boxing clubs together for an unforgettable night of competition, camaraderie, and charity.
