When people think about a relaxing vacation, they probably consider a tropical destination such as the Caribbean Islands or Hawaii. They dream about the waves of the ocean lapping on a sandy beach while they bask in the warm sunshine.

These things can be very relaxing for travelers; however, there are other destinations that offer just as much excitement and leisure.

If you are planning a fabulous getaway for your family, why not choose Alaska? There are several cruise lines that specialize in the Alaskan shore. Here are some reasons why an Alaskan vacation would be just what you need:

Breathtaking Landscape

It is a myth that Alaska is a frozen wasteland. While there are parts that stay cold most of the year, there are areas that have spring and warm summers like the Lower 48. Temperatures can get up to the high 70s and low 80s. The middle portion of the state has weather that is comparable to the Midwest.

Alaska is famous for its acres of pristine wilderness. You can rent an RV or large tent and relax under the Alaskan stars. This state is full of majestic mountains, such as Denali. It has a plethora of rivers and streams that are loaded with salmon. Just being in the middle of nature can bring a serenity that you cannot find anywhere else.

Northern Lights

If you are visiting northern Alaska, you can experience the awesome Northern Lights. They are best seen toward the end of summer and the beginning of September.

These dancing lights are caused by charged particles from the sun entering the Earth’s atmosphere at the northern and southern poles. There are several companies that offer Northern Lights tours. The vibrant hues of this natural phenomenon will be something that you and your family will remember forever.

Winter Sporting

You may be the kind of person who finds relaxation in Winter weather.

Alaska has many glaciers to explore, as well as Winter sporting resorts. If you love to ski or snowboard, you will feel right at home in this winter playground. There are resorts that cater to all levels of skiing, from beginners to those who want to jump out of helicopters.

Wildlife

Alaska is home to some of the most diverse wildlife in America.

Bears are plentiful in this state, such as the famed Kodiak brown bear. If you enjoy birdwatching, you will not be disappointed. You can get glimpses of regional animals such as Arctic foxes and snowshoe hares.

Be sure to bring your camera, because you never know when you may cross paths with a stately moose.

Alaska also has one of the world’s greatest populations of American bald eagles. If you like to hunt and fish, be sure to visit during peak seasons.

Hitting The Town

You will find all sorts of restaurants and cafes that serve local delicacies and well as popular haute cuisine. Find deep relaxation in one of the state’s many massage clinics and health spas.

If shopping is your thing, then you are in for a treat. Alaska does not have a state sales tax, so you can save a ton of money on the things you buy.

If you need to recharge and have a change of scenery, you will love Alaska. You can even come during Winter Solstice and catch up on some much needed sleep between the 3:00 pm sunset and 10:00 am sunrise. Don’t worry though, many towns will enjoy over 80 days of uninterrupted daylight in the Summer.

Alaska is like a world of its own with its vast wilderness, wildlife, and modern amenities.

Once you visit, you are sure to come back soon. That is the magical allure of Alaska.
