Turning a Halloween Costume into a Cos-Play Homage to Cinema

The inspiration for this project started when my daughter wanted to be Atreyu from The Neverending Story for Halloween. It was such a cool concept, and I made her a simple costume loosely based on the one from the move. I had her pose for a photo with my iPhone, and just for my own entertainment I Photoshopped her riding Falkor the luck dragon from the movie, with a photo of Turnagain arm I took for the background.

After Halloween, she wanted to wear all of the costumes she owned, and the spark for the project grew from there.

I assembled photos that I had taken (some really old scans of photos from years ago, some fresh off the iphone) into these worlds that my daughter inhabits, inspired by her creative costume play. She’s got such a big personality, it’s easy to see her starring in these scenes. The more I make these the more I have ideas for more. I can see this going on for many years!

Tara Gildow is a creative weirdo born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated with a BFA in painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art and spends most of her days daydreaming of the painting, sculpting, or illustration project she will work on next. When she's not working on art, she's playing dress up and building cardboard forts with her 3-year old.
