Alyeska Pipeline Celebration of Lights
The Alyeska Pipeline Celebration of Lights, a Solstice fireworks show, will light up the sky in downtown Fairbanks on Saturday, December 21 at 8 p.m.
“Fireworks are a great way to celebrate the Solstice,” said David van den Berg, Executive Director of the Downtown Association.
“While this year’s fireworks show is set to go and boosted by a forecast of warm weather”, van den Berg said, “it is fun to reminisce that last year’s fireworks almost didn’t happen. It was cold enough last year to have second thoughts. We wondered who would come downtown to watch fireworks at -40? Would the show be visible? Would the smoke clear or would it linger in a cloud that thickened with each blast?
“Ultimately, we decided that Fairbanks is Fairbanks and Fairbanksans would indeed come to watch whatever happened.
“Sure enough, at show time, people who didn’t already buy fireworks online for their own celebrations, gathered in downtown’s public spaces, restaurants and bars and families filed out of their houses in downtown’s neighborhoods. When the first blast ripped the dense air, cheers erupted along the river bank. The explosions kept coming. The crazy cheers kept coming. The air cleared after each volley and downtown’s fiery lights were bright and beautiful. Bang! This is how you celebrate the days getting longer.”
This year’s display will happen, bitter cold or balmy. The display is produced by Fire Art Pyrotechnics and made possible by Alyeska Pipeline Services Co. and Badger Towing. It will launch from Griffin Park, along the Chena River, and last 12-15 minutes.
The fireworks show is a family-friendly event and is free and open to the public. Parking is available throughout downtown, including the Parking Garage on 3rd Ave and Noble St. and in the Sadler’s parking lot along Cushman St.
