This December, Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Fairbanks Area will host the inaugural Festival of Trees. Fifty lit and decorated Christmas trees are set to transform the vacant Alaska Communication Services (ACS) building in downtown Fairbanks into a hall of holiday merriment. The trees are being decorated and sponsored by local businesses and individuals.
The finished trees will be on display and open to the public for a festive weekend in December, featuring sing-a-longs, a bake sale, craft vendors, gift wrapping, live entertainment and a visit from Santa. The celebration opens on First Friday, Dec. 6, with refreshments and a special performance by the Peace Choir. The festival will conclude on Dec. 8.
It’s the only event in Fairbanks that plays off of traditional Christmas themes, said event organizer Kara Nash.
“This is an event where families can come out and feel like it’s Christmas,” she added.
Performers for the festival include the Suzuki Strings,Dance Theatre Fairbanks, O Tallulah and a community drum circle.
“[Playing live is] just a lot of fun and it’s a great time of year”  said Angelia Williams of O Tallulah. Williams feels privileged to play at the festival, citing the good that Habitat for Humanity does.
“[The event will be] a bright spot in a dark winter,” she added.
Nash is currently looking for vendors, sponsors and performers for the event. She can be reached at 687-8444.
